In the Footsteps of Buddha is a historical journey across the poorest regions of India and Nepal to retrace the steps that Gautama Buddha walked on his path toward enlightenment and the beginning of Buddhism. It is a journey that begins in Lumbini, Nepal where the Buddha was born and ends in Kushinagar, India, where he died and attained final Nirvana – his exit from this earth.
In between we travel with Buddha as he traversed the dusty plains of the Ganga valley. Gorakhpur is a city in the eastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, near the border with Nepal was the setting for the young Buddha renounced his princely clothing before setting out on his quest of truth in 600 BC. Wandering as a monk, he finally reached the banks of Falgu River, near the city of Gaya. There he sat in meditation under a bodhi tree. After three days and three nights of meditation, Siddhartha (Buddha) attained enlightenment and insight, and the answers that he had sought. He then spent seven weeks at seven different spots in the vicinity meditating and afterward he traveled to Sarnath, where he began teaching Buddhism for the first time. Located in Bihar, the poorest region of India, Bodhgaya is the spiritual home of Buddhists and is the most important Buddhist sites in the world. To experience Bodghaya is to envelope yourself with an all-pervading sense of peace and calm. In Rajgir we see Gautam Buddha spending several months meditating, and preaching at Griddhkuta. He delivered some of his most famous sermons here. Nalanda, the ancient university of India was renowned as a center of learning with over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers. Buddha visited here many times and would reside in the mango grove where he held discussions with the many scholars. Nalanda is now a world Heritage site.
As our spiritual journey across the Ganges valley unfolds you will sense the noise and smells and jostling street of Gautama’s world – a real world where a young man gave up riches and royal name to become a spiritual leader. In the Footsteps of Buddha is a story that will shed new light on the Buddha and discriminate between the facts and the fiction.
