Swordsmanship of the Haga Dojo at the Budokan
This is sword master Terukuni Uki of the Haga dojo which is located in the Budokan, Tokyo. They practice Iaido or drawing the sword with real katana, that is, a samurai sword with a deadly sharp edge. Their philosophy is to recreate the old ways of sword practice in Japan.
History of the Haga
When World War II ended, Kendo (swordsmanship or way of the sword) was banned and the Nihon Butokukai was disbanded. However, there were some Kendo-practitioners who refused to let the flame of Kendo be put out, and continued their practice. One of them was the founder of Haga Junichi. He was a top disciple of Nakayama Hakudo in Yushinkan and trained in Shindo Munen Ryu. Today the Haga school is preserved at the Nihon Budokan’s 2nd Small Dojo, where the swordsmanship of Haga Junichi is practiced diligently and still preserved today. The current President is Uki Terukuni, tasked to carry on this budo tradition.
